Music-Related
Experience
Dr.
Dakin has written program notes for over 30 concerts of the Choral
Society of Durham, including ten joint concerts with the North Carolina
Symphony. She also has written program notes for Triangle Opera
and the Duke University Opera Workshop. She has written notes for
works from the baroque period to the late 20th century, including
choral and orchestral works and operas. Her notes have been praised
by Triangle-area music reviewers, including John Lambert (in Spectator
Magazine and Classical Voice of North Carolina).
Since
1982, Dr. Dakin has designed and edited all Choral Society concert
programs and arranged for their printing. In addition to writing
program notes, she has edited the notes written by conductors Rodney
Wynkoop and Larry Cook, and she has co-written program notes with
Dr. Wynkoop for five concerts. For many Choral Society programs,
she has revised the translations of texts, often in consultation
with native speakers of the languages. She also has designed and
edited programs for the Vocal Arts Ensemble of Durham since 1997.
Dr.
Dakin teaches an introductory opera appreciation course annually
for Duke University Continuing Education. In February 2004, she
will offer an introduction to Wagners Ring Cycle through Duke
Continuing Ed. She also has made presentations on opera for the
Duke Institute for Learning in Retirement and to community groups.
On
behalf of the Choral Society of Durham, Dr. Dakin has been interviewed
on local radio about works to be presented in concert.
