Duke Continuing Education Scientific Writing and Editing: Since 1982, have taught a 12-hour course in scientific writing and editing aimed at scientists who need to improve their skills for writing journal articles, reports, dissertations, and other scientific documents. Duke Continuing Education Technical Writing Career Change Workshop: Since 1984, have taught a one-day workshop aimed at people who would like to explore technical writing as a potential career. NIEHS How to Write and Publish a Scientific Paper: Since 1998, have taught a 12-hour course for NIEHS scientists who are starting to publish journal articles. In addition to writing skills and the parts of a scientific paper, the course covers the process of scientific publication. Duke Continuing Education Choosing and Using Type: Since 2001, have taught a workshop on typography for desktop publishing. Participants learn basic principles of typography and critique real-world examples. Family Health International Scientific Writing: Developed an intensive course to train researchers from developing countries to write up their results for publication in international scientific journals. Presented a two-week course in Research Triangle Park for visiting Asian physicians, who arrived with data and left with drafts of journal articles. Presented one-week versions of the course in Nairobi, Kenya, for staff of the National Hospital (1992) and for FHI research staff in Kenya and Ethiopia (2002). Burroughs Wellcome Co. Scientific Writing: For six years, presented numerous 12-hour on-site scientific writing classes for Burroughs Wellcome scientific staff, encluding the entire staff of one division. N.C. Writers Network Teacher Training: For the Networks Center for Business and Technical Writing, evaluated applications from prospective teachers of business and technical writing. Developed and taught a 20-hour teacher training course, which was presented in the states Triangle and Triad areas. Research Triangle Institute Technical Editing Workshop: Developed and presented a workshop for RTI editors, covering advanced editing skills and standards, editing project management, and author-editor relations. Tutoring: Have worked individually with scientists and physicians, including non-native English speakers, to improve their skills for writing journal articles, abstracts, and grant proposals. Evaluation of Writing Tests: Served as the external evaluator of scientific writing tests given to prospective employees by the Burroughs Wellcome Human Resources Department. |
